Expats are Everywhere: Speak Their Language, Meet Their Needs

Purpose of this Course

As the world economy becomes increasingly global, more employers are sending their employees on assignments away from their home or "passport" country. This phenomenon is multi-directional: North Americans are sent throughout the world, but workers from all over the world come to the US, Canada, and Mexico. Asians go to Europe, South Americans go to Australia, Africans go to the Middle East. Virtually any combination of worker movement that one can imagine can occur.

Much has been written about the expatriate experience and the importance of a successful assignment. A failed expatriate assignment can easily cost an employer a half million dollars. Therefore it is critically important for the employer to carefully select and then support the expatriate and, if applicable, his or her accompanying spouse and/or family members.

This course provides an overview of expatriate support services that can be provided by EAPs and by therapists in private practice. Even smaller EAPs will find that their client companies have non-US families living in the US (sometimes called "inpatriates"). It is not uncommon to find even small employers sending at least one person on extended assignment outside of their home country.

Opportunities exist for EAPs to provide services in a variety of ways: consultation, assistance in employee selection, and ongoing support of expatriates once the assignment has begun. To do this successfully, it is important to understand the expectations of the employer as well as the expatriate. An awareness of the normal stages of cross-cultural adjustment also helps the EAP determine whether an individual's problems derive from a clinical issue or a normal stage of adjustment to a foreign culture.

Sally Lipscomb brings to this course years of experience working in international EAPs. A former Vice-President of the International Region of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA), Sally lived as an expat herself in Belgium. She has consulted with many companies on expatriate management. Join Sally for a brief, but intense, half-day course on providing expatriate support services.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, participants should be able to:
  • Ask employers about the demographics of their expatriate employees and understand what those demographics mean for the EAP
  • Explain why many expatriate support programs are rarely used and describe how to reverse that trend
  • Describe the normal stages of cross-cultural adjustment
  • Understand the dynamics of global families
  • Become familiar with the normal changes in role for the expatriate, the accompanying partner, and children in global families
  • Understand the challenges of growing up outside the passport country and know how to counsel parents in supporting their children
  • Interpret the common concerns of expatriates and distinguish these from clinical issues
  • Identify specific ways to support expatriates through your EAP or private practice
  • Describe how to make your services known to expatriates

Who Should Attend
